Dr. Seun is a Black Queen. In 2018, the International Olympic Committee recognized Dr. Seun as the first African to compete in both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.

This year, in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, Dr. Seun had the distinct honor of carrying in the Nigerian flag. She attended in the capacity of an IOC Athletes Commission candidate, Team Nigeria Doctor, and Team Leader for the Winter Olympic sports in Nigeria.

Let’s celebrate Dr. Seun Adigun, and all our Black Queens this month, and every day of every year, because they are truly Superheroes!

Lyda Conley (1869-1946)

First female Native American plaintiff to present a case before @ussupremecourt

One of the first female Native attorneys, Eliza Burton “Lyda” Conley graduated from Kansas City School of Law in 1902 and became the first woman admitted to the Kansas bar.

According to the Women’s Museum of California, the sale of the Wyandot Nation’s sacred Kansas burial ground to the U.S. federal government in 1906 upset Conley, who was a member of the tribe. So she and her sisters launched a campaign to protect and preserve the Huron Cemetery in Kansas City, where many of their own ancestors were laid to rest. They took up camp just outside the cemetery, took turns standing guard with muskets drawn, and put up signs that read “Trespassers, Beware!” to prevent the sale of the land.

Conley stood her ground for years. And in 1909, her fight to protect her tribe’s sacred land went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. That year, she put her legal skills to work and became the only third woman, the second female attorney, and the first Native American woman to argue a case in front of the Supreme Court. Many believe her case, in which she argued that Native American burial grounds were entitled to federal protection, was the first of its kind, too.

Sadly, the Supreme Court dismissed Conley’s case. But nevertheless, she persisted, and in 1916, the cemetery was designated a federal park. Today, the cemetery—renamed Wyandot National Burial Ground—enjoys National Historic Landmark status. Conley was laid to rest in the cemetery following her death in 1946.

Reposted from @blackwomenhistory Taytu Betul (c.1851–1918), was a formidable queen and empress of Ethiopia.
She used her exceptional intelligence to strengthen and
extend her power through an adroit blend of patronage,
political marriages and leadership craft.
Determined to resist imperialist designs on her country, she increasingly opposed any negotiations that would result in the loss of Ethiopian territory. When diplomacy gave way to war, she rode out at the head of her own army, at her husband’s side.
It was she who devised the plan which led to the Ethiopian victory at Makalle, and her presence was crucial in the Ethiopian victory at Adwa in 1896, the most significant victory of any African army during the climax of European colonialism. She founded Addis Ababa, which remains Ethiopia’s capital city today, and the final decades of her reign witnessed a period of modernization, which gradually opened Ethiopia up to trade and greater technical expertise. https://en.unesco.org/womeninafrica/taytu-betul/biography

Statements like this one from Paul Massaro, current advisor to the U.S. on foreign affairs, are violent and harmful because they contribute to the erasure of oppressed populations from around the world, throughout history and in the present time.

These statements show why the histories of indigenous, colonized and enslaved people need to taught in schools everywhere. And why cultural studies, Critical Race Theory, and theories of colonization AND decolonization need to be interrogated and centered in discussions of history, geopolitics, and foreign affairs.

Because otherwise, this is what you get: people who go through our education system and remain ignorant about the way things work and the atrocities and crimes happening in their own back yard, and who then get put in positions of power without understanding how their ignorance is harmful to the people around them and those they purport to serve.

We can support Ukrainian without pushing ignorant, racist, colonial, Eurocentric, anti-Black, and white supremacist narratives. We can applaud Ukraine’s resistance without undermining and erasing the resistance, struggle and suffering of other people.

Resistance is not uniquely European. To say so is utterly disingenuous. Resistance by oppressed people is necessary, righteous, and “legendary” ALL the time— and not just when white Europeans do it.” - @drbryanleyva

Paul Massaro got his ass handed to him, but he had it coming. We need to be more mindful with our words.

Substitute “white” with Iranian.⁣
Or Muslim.⁣
Or immigrant.⁣

Anything. And this story would be HUGE.⁣
Instead you can hardly find it.⁣

According to the DOJ, the three men—Christopher Brenner Cook, 20, of Columbus, Ohio; Jonathan Allen Frost, 24, of Katy, Texas; and Jackson Matthew Sawall, 22, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin— who’ve all been arrested - aimed to blow up and destroy power stations in cities across America in the hopes of starting a race war. ⁣

This is a CRAZY story. ⁣

But here’s the thing: all white people don’t get blamed for the actions of 3 white men. Never do.⁣

And you and I know it’s not that way for anybody else. (at United States)
